Reflections on 2020 & Plans for 2021

Posted on Dec 23, 2020Mohamed Said

In 2020 I published a book, started a YouTube Channel, moved back to the big city, and picked up cycling again.

In 2021 I'd like to finish Ironman 70.3 Egypt, make more video tutorials, and speak at Laracon.

2020 was a tough year on everyone, I'm lucky I still have a job and super lucky non of my family or friends had complications from the virus. I also can't believe I managed to work on a side project—my book—and release it within 2020. It was a very slow progress but I always thought working on a book requires full-time attention. Turned out I only needed 1 hour every work day and 3-4 hours every weekend.

As for Laravel, it was a really productive year for us. We introduced so many good features into Vapor, Forge, and Envoyer (with the help of James and Nuno). The framework and its libraries were in good shape the entire year—many thanks to Dries—and we were able to release some great additions.

Biggest challenge in 2020 was caring for an extremely high need baby on our own. We were under a lockdown from March to July which meant no daycare or nurseries. Once life went back to normal, we decided to move back to the big city to be close to family and have access to more help.

Hello 2021

Finishing an Ironman race is a 2 year old dream of mine, I've been day dreaming about crossing that finish line for too long and now that the race is coming to Egypt it's a huge opportunity. I think this is going to be the biggest challenge of the year, training while working full-time and caring for a high need child is not going to be easy. Swimming 1.9k, cycling 90k, and running 21k back to back is crazy. Let's see how it goes :)

Aside from sports, the feedback I got on my book boosted my confidence and made me believe I have something worth publishing, so this year I want to publish more. Speaking, writing, and recording videos are things I enjoy doing so the plan this year is to do them more often and more efficient.

To help increase my productivity I've upgraded my work setup by replacing my old 13" MacBook Pro from 2014 with the new 13" 2020 MacBook Pro (with the Intel chip) and brought a 27" monitor.

As for Laravel, I'd love to maintain the same level of productivity we have as a team. In addition to that, we're planning to release the next major version of Laravel Spark. There's also this idea I pitched to Taylor for a new product that I hope we have the time to look into during 2021.
